The Dog Blog by Kristin

I never thought I’d have the opportunity to write a blog called the “Dog Blog”. I am filled with excitement to be able to announce that Big Grins has a “Comfort Dog In Training”. What does this mean? It means that after years of trying to convince Dr. Greg that we needed one, he is as excited as we are!

You may have seen our announcement on our Big Grins Facebook page. If you haven’t, make sure to follow us on Facebook. Sugar, ironically named for the dental office, joined us in August. She came to us from a loving breeder in Castle Rock.

Sugar is a Bernadoodle. Her mom is a Bernese Mountain Dog and her dad is a mini poodle. This means she is as hypoallergenic as a dog can be, and does not shed. She is guesstimated to weigh between 35-40 pounds when fully grown. For now she is a 12-week-old bundle of fluff that has already brought so much joy. We’ve tested the allergy part of Sugar with Dr. Greg’s wife who suffers from severe dog allergies and have had no problems!

Alyssa Rocha is a professional dog trainer who is helping us with this process. She interviewed litters of puppies until we found our best fit. We don’t think she could have picked any better. Her temperament is sweet, calm and she LOVES kids. She is smart and wants to interact, but is content just lounging in our office manager’s office. For now, this is where she spends most of her time, but does occasionally go back to the clinic with her handler to learn about her new “home”. The trainer works with her twice a week already. Sugar will pass rigorous behavior tests and training to be able to comfort kiddos in the clinic who may be apprehensive or just love dogs! Research supports the use of comfort animals in the dental setting. We are glad to be able to offer this benefit for our patients.

Stay tuned and watch Sugar grow with us! She loves saying hi, and we are excited to have her as part of our Big Grins family!
